Arisi Paruppu Saadham

Ingredients

  • soak, 20-30 minutes

    • 1 cup parboiled rice, washed

    • 1/4 cup toor dal, washed

    • 2 cups water

  • saute 1

    • 3 tablespoon Indian sesame / gingely oil

    • 1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds

    • 1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds

    • 2 sprigs curry leaves

    • 2 dried red chillies

  • saute 2

    • 2 onions, finely chopped

    • 6 cloves garlic

  • saute 3

    • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped

    • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

    • 1 teaspoon sambar powder

    • 1 teaspoon salt

  • pressure cook

    • 2 cups hot water

  • serve

    • 1 tablespoon hot Ghee for serving

Directions

  1. Rinse rice and dal, then soak in water for 20-30 minutes.

  2. In the pressure cooker, heat oil until hot. Add in the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves and dried red chillies. Let the mustard seeds splutter.

  3. Add in the onions and the garlic and fry till the onions are soft and slowly starting to brown.

  4. Add in the finely chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, sambar powder and salt. Fry well till the tomatoes are juiced down and mashed together.

  5. Add 2 cups hot water. Add the straied rice and dal. Pressure cook on high for 8 minutes with a natual release.

  6. Serve with hot ghee drizzled on top.
